Gaze: Beauty in the Eye of the Beholder
Gaze is a project I worked on at university as my workshop project. It is a comic about how illustrated and animated media can influence the way people see beauty and body image in real life. The idea of this project came from seeing how different the art style of animation and comics can vary depending on the era and country it came from. Body image is an important topic to think about, and is only more relevant in this day and age.
The two stories included in Gaze are Gossip and Absorption. Gossip follows a girl who wants to show her appreciation for a comic by cosplaying as the main character. She then receives a nasty message, and looks to her favourite medium to determine her next choice. Social media is a new factor that can play on a person's insecurities, so I thought it would be good to explore it.
Absorption is a story about four different fans taking away different lessons about body image from the same television show. Some of the takeaways are positive, while others are negative.
